The insurance industry is undergoing a profound change. This change is driven by three interdependent factors. The first is the new wave of national and international regulations pertaining to reporting, capital adequacy and risk management. The second driver is coming from developments in accounting standards that are specifically targeting insurance providers. Finally, the search for better returns is pushing companies deeper into stock markets investment strategies where many participants are not subject to any regulations.
From within the industry itself, there are noticeable changes in the designed of products, management and diversification into other non-traditional financial services. There is an increasing reliance on brokerage which can extend providers’ reach but at the same time raises other regulatory issues.
These developments are creating numerous opportunities and challenges particularly in field of risk management, supervision and business strategies. There are technical challenges also. What sort of risk management and reporting framework or model can capture the ever changing facets of this industry? What impact are these having on actuarial assumptions, reserve calculations and economic capital? What solutions can reinsurance offer in a world of increasing risk interdependence?
